Assignment 3

My zine is about the University of Toledo Dance Team since I am a member of the program and thought it would be a great idea to highlight all activities, events, etc. that my team participates in. When creating each of these designs, I knew I wanted to incorporate some of my teammates on the covers. On the cover of the first design, I make 5 cutouts of individual team photos and placed them in an organized clump while paying attention to each pose they were in. I also wanted to include a fade from the bottom up just to add an extra detail. I positioned the text below the individuals because after placing the text in various places, I felt that it looked the best. On the second cover of my first design, I wanted to keep a similar idea but instead of using all poses again I wanted to include a dancer doing a jump with a couple full body poses next to her that overlapped and fit well together. This time, I decided to position the text above and below the image and have the image overlapping the text just a bit. On both the first and second design cover, I also wanted to make sure everyone was in the same uniform to look more put together and not so mix-matched. On the back covers of both designs I wanted to incorporate contact information since I do not plan on having a whole page dedicated to that inside the magazine and include the volume/issue number. Both back covers are very similar but I chose to play around with different wording to see what would look the best to use in my final design. Overall, I wanted to keep both designs on the simpler side.

  1. Hi Logan!

I really like the concept for your zine and how personal and special it is for you. I think both designs look well thought out. The second design is really strong, especially with the large font...it really catches your attention. I would be interested to see how the first cover would look if the font were larger or spread out more. I think the pictures work well on both front covers and are placed appropriately. I love all the small details that you included, like on the second cover how her foot overlaps the T or on the top how the pom-pom overlaps some of the letters...it is evident that you have an eye for the little details. I also appreciate that you kept the back covers simple and clean...I think it works well with the front covers and balances everything out nicely. I think both work well, but I think the second spread is really nicely done.

  2. Hi Logan,

I think that your zine has a really cool idea and I think that it's also cool that it's about something you're already apart of. I also feel like it would be a good piece of UT material for the group if people are interested in joining the Rockettes. I personally enjoy the cover of the first design. I think that the way that you have the girls all grouped together and the way that it does fade at the bottom has a very nice composition and has multiple leading lines that send the eyes of the viewer to look all over the cover and directs them through it. I also think that putting the title on the bottom was a good decision but I do wish that you had played around with the typeface a little bit more to differentiate the title and sub-title. I also like the back of the first zine the most too especially with the navy bar at the top and the white lettering. I find that it is still interesting, but also gives the viewer something to notice. I also like that you decided to go on the more simple side because having a crazy type face or colors would take away from the pictures on the cover. Overall I think you did a great job and can't wait to see what it looks like once it is completed!
