Design Project: Assignment 1

 The product I have chosen to analyze is a lamp -

1. The body of the lamp is painted in matte black and has a hourglass-like figure. Linear grooves flow throughout the body which emphasizes its form. The body has a few tarnished spots that are brown in color and give it a "worn" quality. The bulb is surrounded by a light brown lampshade that has script writing in black (it is unclear which language it is). A bow made of the same brown fabric is tied in a knot, hugging the shade. Gold metal encompasses the bulb and is holding the shade in place. 

2. The lamps function consists of providing light that is emitted when a electric current passes through it. 

The main difference between my sketch and diagram is that my sketch includes more detail of the lamp. The diagram is solely just a general outline that aids in describing how the product functions. 

3.   The relationship between the objects form and function refers to the design/structure of the lamp in comparison to how it operates. The lamps function (of producing light) influences the form because there must be a way to hold the bulb and cover most of the electrical cord within the body of the lamp. I feel this does not necessarily limit the form immensely (as there are numerous styles and forms of lamps) but these two components must be present in the form. The form does add to the function of the object. For example, the bulb must have a place to sit and connect to the electrical wire in order to produce light safely and efficiently. 

4. The lamp can easily be compared to the ten principles of good design. It is long-lasting, built to provide illumination as long as the bulb one purchases lasts. However, the body/frame itself can last years in various environments like your home, classroom, etc. as decor (unless broken). The lamp is innovative and can be designed into a different structure that is similar yet unique on its own. The innovation could hold the bulb a different way, consist of a different color palette, be cordless and have a different source of power, etc. The product is useful thanks to its design. Without a placeholder for the bulb or spot for the cord, it would not be able to function properly or even at all. Additionally, the overall design is constructed very successfully to allow all the components to work together as one. Based on the type of bulb you purchase, lamps are somewhat environmentally friendly. If you use a eco friendly LED light, they are energy efficient and long lasting which saves energy and can even last longer. Lastly, the lamp overall is fairly simple in terms of design. It focuses on the function itself and does include anything extra that hinders its quality.
